Gwen Carr Speaking Event 29 June 2020

Dear Coast Guard Academy Community,

On 29 June, CGA will host a brief visit from Mrs. Gwen Carr, the mother of
Eric Garner, who was slain by a New York City police officer in 2014. Mrs.
Carr is the founder of the “I Can’t Breathe” movement, and a partner in
creating police reform legislation in New York State. Her engagement at CGA
will be a short breakfast meeting with a small group.

There is, however, an opportunity for all to hear from Mrs. Carr. The New
London NAACP will host a community conversation at Ocean Beach Park
beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, 29 June. The hosts are asking those who
attend to bring a beach chair and wear a face mask. In addition to speaking,
Mrs. Carr will be signing copies of her 2018 book, “This Ends Today,” the
title of which she said is drawn from the words her son Eric said to
officers who had continuously approached him.
